Junior Green, Senior Red Victorious in Week 3

The third week of action in the Shanghai American Football League sponsored by Coca Cola saw two intense battles fought at the Shanghai Rugby Club.  The Junior game was won by the Kerry Sports Green Dragons by a score of 20-7 and the Senior game was won by the Big Bamboo Red Dragons 12-0.  The Junior Green Dragons now hold a 2-game advantage on the Red (plus one tie) and the Senior Red Dragons lead their series 2-1 over the Green Dragons.

In the Junior game, the Green Dragons started with an impressive drive into Red Dragon territory, but Evan Clark of the Red Dragons recovered a fumble at his own 31-yard line to stop the drive.  The Red Dragons then took the ball and scored on their first possession, as wide receiver Henry Sykes scored on a well executed, 51-yard reverse.  Quarterback Ted Holloway scored the conversion and the Red was up 7-0.  The Green came roaring back, scoring on the second play of their next drive, when running back Ido Tzhori scored on a 53-yard run.  Quarterback Alec Grundman scored the conversion and the game went to halftime knotted at seven points each.  The Green Dragons came out strong in the second half and Grundman scored on a 9-yard keeper followed by fullback Chandler McGruder’s conversion run.  Sebastian Costantini then scored on a 38-yard run to put the game out of reach.

For the Green Dragons, major contributors on defense were Costantini (4 tackles), Travis Flack, McGruder, George Merkt, Tyler Pearson, and Ross Clary (all with 3 tackles each). On offense, the Green Dragons were led by the rushing of Tzhori (81 yds), Costantini (77 yds), McGruder (27 yds), Grundman (7 yds), and the blocking of Ben Jarrett, Alan Whitehead, and Zac Jones.  The leading rushers for the Red Dragons were Sykes, Holloway (25 yds.), Sebastian Hawes (24 yds.), and Michael Harris (6 yds.).  David O’Rourke, Tucker Dunn, and Oliver Robinson were some of the leading blockers.  On defense, the Red Dragons were led by Clark (7 tackles), Camden Webster (5 tackles), Harris (4 tackles), and Hawes (3 tackles).

The Senior game started a bit sloppy, with both teams losing fumbles one their first possession.  It was more costly for the Green Dragons as their fumble came at the Red’s 9-yard line.  After exchanging punts, the Red Dragons struck with their big play combination of quarterback Jake Holloway and wide receiver Cleet Wrzesinski.  This time it was for a 70-yard bomb as Holloway found Wrzesinski behind the Green Dragon secondary.  The conversion attempt fell short and Red Dragons went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.  In the second half, the Red took advantage of a short field and some penalties to score again when running back Ryan Bacon scored on a 3-yard run.  The Green Dragons final attempt to score was thwarted when Holloway intercepted quarterback Beau Kewley’s pass.

The Red Dragon’s offense was mostly an air attack, with Holloway throwing for 131 yards, all of them to Wrzesinski.  The running of Jaxson Barlow (13 yds.) and Bacon (9 yds.) also contributed to the ground attack, as well as the blocking of Carl Bengtsson, Eric Jun, and Mikas Hansen.  The Red defense was led by Jonathan Pride (6 tackles, 1 fumble rec.), Cameron Cooper (5 tackles), Barlow (4 tackles), Bacon (3 tackles, 1 fumble rec, 1 INT), and Holloway (3 tackles, 1 INT).  The Green Dragons were led on offense by Kewley (37 yds. rushing), Jake Desautels (30 yds. rushing), Jake Lannen (25 yds. rushing, 7 yds. receiving), Matthew Greisinger (11 yds. rushing), and the blocking of Michael Radlinski, Tommy Lynch, and Alex Greisinger.  Defensively, the Green were led by Lannen (9 tackles), Alfred Adams (8 tackles), Desautels (6 tackles, 1 INT), and Bailey Tang (5 tackles).

Green Dragons Sweep in SAFL Week Two Action

The second week of action in the Shanghai American Football League sponsored by Coca Cola had two very exciting games, which were both won by the Kerry Sports Green Dragons.  The Green took the Junior game by a score of 8-0 and the Seniors used a second half comeback to win 13-6.

In the Junior game, the Big Bamboo Red Dragons started the game with an impressive drive into Green Dragon territory, led by a long run by quarterback Teddy Holloway and a long pass completion.  When a score by the Red Dragons looked inevitable, Alec Grundman intercepted a pass on his own 30 yard-line and rambled 70 yards for the “Pick 6” touchdown.  The Green Dragons drove to the Red’s 29 yard-line late in the first half, but the drive stalled on downs when Red defensive lineman Camden Webster sacked quarterback Grundman.  The second half did not produce any scoring.  The Green had a long drive into Red territory, but were forced to punt.  The Red had one final drive to tie the game, but time ran out with the ball at midfield.

For the Green Dragons, major contributors on defense were Grundman (5 tackles, 1 INT), Chandler McGruder (4 tackes), Sebastian Costantini (3 tackles, 1 INT), Zac Jones (3 tackles), Alan Whitehead (3 tackles), George Merkt (3 tackles), and Ross Clary (1 INT).  On offense, the Green Dragons were led by the rushing of Grundman (16 yds), Costantini (20 yds), and McGruder (23 yds) and the blocking of Lucas Herman, Spencer Herman, and Tyler Pearson.  Despite not scoring, the Red Dragons offense outgained the Green Dragons.  The leading rushers were Holloway (56 yds.), Evan Clark (40 yds.), and Henry Sykes (9 yds.).  Noah Burns, Alex Gaylord, and Eden Mangous were some of the leading blockers.  On defense, the Red Dragons were led by Michael Harris (4 tackles), Sebastian Hawes (2 tackles), Nate Lannen (2 tackles), Tucker Dunn (2 tackles), David O’Rourke (2 tackles), and Wade Moldenhauer (1 INT).

In the Senior game, the Red Dragons scored in the first half on a 2-yard run by fullback Jaxson Barlow.  The drive was supported by two separate runs of 17 yards by quarterback Jake Holloway.  The Green’s primary threat in the first half came when Michael Radlinski recovered a fumble at the Red Dragons’ 38-yard line.  The Green was able to drive down to the Red’s 20-yard line, but were stopped on downs.  The Green Dragons started the 2nd half with an impressive drive to the Red’s 11 yard-line, but were again stopped on downs.  Alfred Adams then recovered a fumble at the Red’s 19-yard line to provide the Green another chance for a score.  Three plays later, quarterback Beau Kewley ran a keeper around the right end for a 17-yard touchdown.  The conversion attempt failed, leaving the game tied at six.  The Red Dragons managed a long drive into the Green’s territory, but were stopped when Holloway’s 4th down pass fell incomplete.  The inspired Green Dragons put together a game-winning drive, capped by another keeper by Kewley.  This time, it was 19 yards around the right end for the score.  Kewley then found receiver Mitchell Haughee for the one-point conversion giving the Green the 7-point lead.  The banged-up Red Dragons had one final attempt to score, but Holloway’s final attempt fell incomplete.

The Green Dragons were led on offense by Kewley (40 yds. rushing, 6 for 11 passing), Jake Desautels (70 yds. rushing), Jake Lannen (15 yds. rushing, 28 yds. receiving), and the blocking of Bailey Tang, Brennan Arnold, and Victor Van Damme.  Defensively, the Green were led by Lannen (12 tackles), Adams (9 tackles), and Trevor Maizland (4 tackles).  The Red Dragons offense was a balanced rushing attack, led by the running of Holloway (57 yds.), Barlow (44 yds.), and Ryan Bacon (28 yds.) and the blocking of Tanner Burns, Sam Stephenson, and Nick Law.  The Red defense was led by Barlow (7 tackles), Jonathan Pride (6 tackles), Holloway (4 tackles), and Cleet Wrzesinski (1 INT).
